Gwen has grown up knowing about this time-travel gene in her family, and even when it wasn’t her with the gene she was never supposed to tell anyone about it. Something I loved in this book was the friendship between Gwen and her best friend Lesley. I honestly thought he was going to be some arrogant love interest that would make no sense – and although to some point, this was Gideon, I really did love him as a character.

I did not expect to love Gideon as much as I did. And just in case you’re wondering, you make me want to throw up too!”ĭo I really need any more examples as to why I love Gwen? “Will the fact that an arrogant, long-haired, violin-playing creep in silk stockings can’t think of anything better to do than order me about, even though I’ve just saved his stupid life, will that disappear as well? If you ask me, it’s not surprising that I feel like puking.

I noticed when my ankle turned over,” I said indignantly. She really was a great character to narrate this story, and I loved reading from her perspective! Example of Gwen being the sass queen And I loved that her knowledge a lot of the time came from period movies, it just made me laugh. I loved that because she wasn’t trained to be the time traveller of her family, she really didn’t know all that much about all the eras she was visiting. She was also incredibly funny, and she well and truly made this book. She was sassy, snarky, and just entertaining to read. Overall I don’t think I missed out on too much with this book, but as I don’t speak German, I guess I will never know. I also wonder if things are missing in the translation that would make the words have more weight to them. I always find translations interesting because it makes me wonder how much is changed to make sense in a different language. This book was originally written in German, and translated into English.

When Gwen is the one who travels back in time, she is incredibly unprepared, and her life is changed as she is thrust into a mysterious secret society where no one trusts her, and she is forced to risk her life travelling through time. Gwen on the other hand has lived a normal life. It had been predicted that the last time traveller would be Gwen’s cousin Charlotte, meaning Charlotte has had a life of training to prepare for time travel. The female line in her family has a rare time travelling gene that appears randomly throughout the line. Ruby Red follows Gwen, a 16-year-old girl who lives in London with her rather strange family. Ruby Red is a book I would recommend immensely! It was beautifully written, and it had fun and snarky characters, and it had an interesting and exciting plot that had me manically reading long into the early hours of the morning. Ruby Red was one of my favourite reads of 2014. Author: Kerstin Gier (Translated by Anthea Bell)
